What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic and long-lasting health condition that occurs when the blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is our body’s primary source of energy which comes from our intake of food. To transfer the glucose from the food to our cells, our pancreas produces a hormone called Insulin. But sometimes, our body doesn’t make any or enough insulin which causes the glucose to stay in our blood instead of our cells. Then, as we continue to eat, the glucose in our blood keeps on increasing and starts to cause health problems and diabetes.

Types of Diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce Insulin.
  • Type 2 Diabetes, where the body can’t use Insulin properly and is unable to maintain blood sugar levels.
  • Gestational Diabetes, which occurs in women during pregnancy, when the placenta produces Insulin-blocking hormones.
  • Prediabetes, that happens when the body’s sugar levels are higher than normal but aren’t high enough to be diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
