What is High Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is an organic, fat-like substance, present in all the cells in the body. Our body produces all the cholesterol it needs to make hormones, vitamin D, and other substances that help in the digestion of food. High Cholesterol occurs when a person has too much cholesterol in their blood. There are a number of risk factors that can increase a person’s cholesterol which include:

  • Smoking & Drinking Alcohol
  • Being Overweight

Symptoms of High Cholesterol:

There are no symptoms that can help indicate a rise in cholesterol levels. The only way to find out the symptoms is by having a blood test. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institution (NHLBI) suggests that a person’s first test for cholesterol should be done between the ages of 9 and 11, then repeated after every five years.
